Second Serve

For the 14th time in his career Roger Federer saved match points en route to victory on Wednesday in Shanghai, and by the end of his hair-raising 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(7) victory, Federer had saved five match points in total, which is second most in his career, and the most he has saved in a victory in over 11 years.

Federer will rise to No. 2 in the rankings next week as a result of the win.

Watch a video of Federer’s first save above, and note just how close the mighty Fed came within a whisker of defeat against an in-form Mayer. If it weren’t for that let cord, we might never have seen this save, on Mayer’s third match point:

Or this beauty, on Mayer’s fourth match point:

And eventually, this dazzling lob on Federer’s first match point, which ended the affair and left Mayer wondering what might have been.

When it was all said and done, Federer felt fortunate to win. “I think I got unbelievably lucky today,” he said after the match. “Let's be quite honest. I think he deserved it. The first match point was crazy. Then there was a few other ones, as well. It was so close.”

Then he added: “So I feel a bit sorry for Leonardo, I must say, but that's how it goes. You win some, you lose some.”
