Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Before her match against Sharapova last night, unseeded Belarusian Anastasia Yakimova said she’d do what she could. And what she could do was manage to scrape up one game per set. Third seeded Sharapova got off to an iffy start losing the first three points of the match but soon found her rhythm and made quick work of Yakimova, winning 6-1, 6-1 in just over an hour.

The 24-year-old Russian beauty strolled on court carrying a stylish black Head racquet bag which resembled a cute overnight duffle. And it might as well have been; Sharapova walked off the court after midnight which according to her is well past her usual bedtime. She also carried what looked like a large bronze-colored handbag—and I thought I was the only one who took my purse on court.

Yes, the 2006 champ looked as stylish as ever as she wailed away on 23 unforced errors versus Yakimova’s six. But the winners have it—Pova had 28 versus Mova’s two.

Sharapova seemed satisfied with her second round performance and was as soft-spoken as ever in her post-match interview saying “I didn't play my best tennis, but I gave myself a chance to play another match and improve. I did a good job with that.”

In the third round Sharapova will face 26th seeded Italian Flava Pennetta.
