Second Serve

Slovakia’s Martin Klizan was the big winner in the latest ATP rankings released Sunday night, vaulting 12 spots to a career-best No. 33 following his victory at St. Petersburg earlier in the day.

Now 18-11 on the year, Klizan was the main highlight of an otherwise quiet Top 50 with the season winding down.

There was only one minor move inside the Top 20: Gilles Simon moved up to No. 19, surpassing Alexandr Dolgopolov, who fell back to 20th.

At the top of the charts, Roger Federer marked his 297th week as No. 1. Barring a complete meltdown, he’ll make it 300 weeks at No. 1 beginning October 15.

The WTA Top 50 also saw just cosmetic changes. Kaia Kanepi flip-flopped places with Roberta Vinci, taking over No. 15 in the world, and American Vavara Lepchenko moved a spot past Julia Goerges to No. 20 overall.

It has been a sensational year for Lepchenko, who started the season ranked No. 127, but has gone 38-24 overall, reaching the semifinals at Seoul last week before losing to Kanepi.
