Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kaepernick and his former teammate Eric Reid, attended Serena's 6-1, 6-2, US Open third-round sweep of older sister Venus Williams in the US Open third round.
Fans gave Kaepernick a rousing ovation when the players, who are both out of the league now, were flashed on the big screen at the top of Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The 17th-seeded Serena praised Kaepernick, who sparked controversy taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem before NFL games.
"I think every athlete, every human, and definitely every African American should be completely grateful and honored how Colin and Eric are doing so much more for the greater good, so to say," Serena told the media. "They really use their platform in ways that is really unfathomable. I feel like they obviously have great respect from a lot of their peers, especially other athletes, people that really are looking for social change."
