Tsonga Ends Season Due to Ongoing Back Issue

By Erik Gudris

Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will end his season and miss the French Open due to an ongoing back injury.

Tsonga, due to back pain that he’s dealt with since January, will miss his home Grand Slam event starting on September 27th.

The 35-year-old Tsonga posted on Twitter about his decision.

“2020 is to be forgotten. But I still have the morale, the desire, and the motivation to come back in 2021, hoping that things will evolve positively,” Tsonga said. “To find the courts and to fight against all these incredible players would be a dream. Thank you friends for all your support.”

Tsonga has dealt with the ongoing back issue since he was forced to retire in his Australian Open first-round match against Alexei Popyrin while behind 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1.

The world No. 52 has not played a match since then.

Tsonga, a former World No. 5 and a two-time French Open semifinalist, reached the second round in Paris last year.
