Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams suffered a heart-breaking SW19 exit retiring due to a leg injury in her first-round match.

Serena Williams' quest for a record 24th Grand Slam title ended abruptly and painfullly.

The former world No. 1 retired in tears after suffering a right leg injury in her Wimbledon opener.

The sixth-seeded Williams appeared to suffer a leg injury after slipping on Centre Court in her opening match against World No. 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich.




The 39-year-old Williams took the court wearing heavy taping wrapping her right thigh. Williams led the first set 3-2 when she took an awkward step on the backcourt while trying to hit a forehand. She then took a medical time out to have her right leg looked at by a trainer.

At 3-all, Williams began crying as she tried to serve in the next game. Midway through at 30-15, Williams fell again on the court.

A distraught Williams soon decided to retire in the match and left Centre Court to a rousing standing ovation with tears welling in her eyes she waved farewell to fans. Williams left Wimbledon without speaking to the media.
