A magical week continues for 22-year-old Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The talented showman who knocked out World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the second round at Monte-Carlo edged American Taylor Fritz, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, on Friday to reach his first Masters 1000 semifinal.

“When you beat the World No. 1 it gives you a lot of confidence physically, mentally and technically,” Davidovich Fokina added. “I am pushing myself every match to play harder and harder.”


The Spaniard gave Fritz fits on serve, earning 19 break points (including 11 in the deciding third set) and converting four to claim his victory in two hours and 25 minutes.

Fritz was bidding to become the first American to reach the semifinals at Monte-Carlo since Vincent Spadea in 2003. He drops to 20-7 on the season with the loss.

Davidivoch Fokina will face either Grigor Dimitrov or Hubert Hurkacz in the semifinals on Saturday.

“I am enjoying every point,” the Spaniard said on court after the match. “In the first set I had a lot of chances to break but I didn’t do it. But I just stayed focused and believed in myself.”
