John Isner has been the beast of Atlanta for more than a decade, reeling off six titles and amassing a 37-5 record in his home state at the Atlanta Open, but on Friday night 21-year-old Jenson Brooksby was better than the beast.

The world No.43 edged Isner, the defending champion, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to book his spot in the semis and a date with fellow American Frances Tiafoe.

Tiafoe eased past Brandon Nakashima earlier on Friday, improving to 4-0 against his compatriot.

2019 champion Alex de Minaur will face Ilya Ivashka of Belarus in the top-half semi-final.

Nine-time finalist Isner ran out of gas against the scrappy Sacramento native, and it was Brooksby who held sway over the proceedings after he dropped the opening set. Despite 24 aces from Isner, it was Brooksby who engineered three breaks of serve in the final two sets, as he didn’t face a break point from his side in those two sets.

Brooksby improves to a perfect 5-0 lifetime in ATP quarterfinals as he hands the ATP’s all-time ace leader his second defeat before the semifinals in 12 lifetime appearances at Atlanta.
