Dominic Thiem was down by a break twice in a final set with compatriot Sebastian Ofner on Wednesday at Kitzbuhel, but the Austrian responded by breaking back immediately each time and eventually took five of the final six games to finish off a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 triumph to book himself an ATP quarterfinal for the second consecutive week.

“It was a great fight at the end and I’m happy to be through,” said Thiem. “I don’t think there was too much difference in shotmaking. I think there were some small details in the score in the third set. He was up a break twice, and I was able to make the rebreak straightaway twice again. If he holds his serve and goes away in the third set probably it’s going to be a different outcome.”

Thiem has now won seven of his last nine matches on tour, after snapping a 10-match tour-level losing streak earlier this month in Bastad.

The former World No.3 will square off with Germany’s Yannik Hanfmann in the quarterfinals. He is now up to 167 in the ATP live rankings.
