Iga goes for 30

Poland’s Iga Swiatek will try to stretch her winnin streak to 30 on Thursday as she faces American Alison Riske on Court Suzanne Lenglen. The 20-year-old World No.1 has been on a remarkable run overall, and here in Paris she started her tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 thrashing of Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko. That makes 14 bagels in 2022 for Swiatek. She isn’t just winning matches, she is owning them.

Swiatek could end up being tied for the longest WTA winning streak this century if she wins the title - only Venus Williams (35), Serena Williams (34) and Justine Henin (32) have done better since 2000.

Meanwhile Riske is not a clay expert by any means. But she is bidding to log back-to-back wins on the surface for the third time in her career.

Medvedev seeks third round

Daniil Medvedev has only played a pair of matches since returning from hernia surgery, but the Russia has looked fit and is playing well in Paris. He talked of how pleased he was to have engineered a successful recovery after his surgery after his first-round win in Paris.

“Straightaway we made a good plan with my team, with my doctor team and physio team, to try to get me back on track as fast as possible,” Medvedev said. “So I started after four weeks, which usually it can take up to six weeks, I heard, average. I never had pain, so we are going step by step slowly, first day 30 minutes and then 45.

I went to Geneva to see how my body is. I felt great physically. I managed to put really strong practice hours here before Roland Garros. I feel 100% ready physically, so thanks to my team.”

Medvedev faces Serbia’s Laslo Djere, a solid, physical clay-courter that could push the No.2 seed – it will be telling to see how he responds if that happens. Djere defeated Medvedev in their only meeting, on clay in 2017 at Budapest.

Young guns in action

19-year-old Holger Rune, fresh off his first Grand Slam win, will take on Switzerland’s Henri Laaksonen on Court 12. Rune has had a great clay season, winning the title in Munich to rise up to No.40 in the world. He’s been under the radar, likely due to the play of Carlos Alcaraz, but won’t be for much longer.

China’s Zheng Qinwen, also 19, takes on Simona Halep on Court Simonne-Mathieu, while 20-year-old Jannik Sinner, one of the favorites to come out of the lower half of the men’s draw, takes to Court No.7 to face Roberto Carballes Baena.
