(October 13, 2010) A groin injury forced Andy Roddick to retire from Shanghai today and could threaten his quest to finish in the top 10 for the ninth consecutive season. Roddick was in cruise control of today's Shanghai Rolex Masters match against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez when he suffered a right groin strain that forced him to retire while holding a 6-3, 2-3 lead.

The 10th-seeded Roddick won the first set and appeared to suffer the injury stretching for a forehand at 2-1 in the second set. Roddick received treatment and returned to court with his right thigh taped. But Roddick could not move effectively and retired after Garcia-Lopez broke serve to take a 3-2 lead after 57 minutes of play.

Roddick said he initially sustained the injury during his Japan Open match against Gael Monfils last week.

"The past couple of days in practice, I feel like I've been kind of moving like an elephant, kind of slow, just trying to protect it," Roddick said. "I strained it a little bit worse (today), and it was to the point where moving at all felt like I was getting stabbed in the leg. It's really tough to get hurt or tougher to get hurt up a set and a break."

The injury-induced retirement deals a serious blow to Roddick's bid to qualify for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London's O2 Arena, November 21-29th.

“It’s just frustrating," Roddick said. You’ve got to be able to get a little bit of momentum going, and I just feel like I haven’t been able to do that since April or May and a lot of that has been out of my hands.”

The 2003 US Open champion said he will return home to Austin, Texas to recover and aims to return in Basel.

"I'm going to try to go home to Austin," Roddick said. "I'm going to do everything I can to get back for Basel. I think the fact that I still have a shot at London, even after the past year and everything, I think it would be an accomplishment for me."

Garcia-Lopez will face Tomas Berdych for a spot in the quarterfinals. The seventh-seeded Czech defeated Tommy Robredo, 6-0, 6-4, on Tuesday.

Richard Gasquet scored two wins today, beating Ernests Gulbis, 6-1, 6-4, followed by a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over 15th-seeded fellow Frenchman Gael Monfils in the second round.

It was a painful day for American players as Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga dismissed Sam Querrey, 7-6(7), 6-1. Querrey completed a 6-3, 7-6(6) rain-delayed win over Michael Berrer before bowing to Tsonga.
