Kiki Bertens hits a backhand

(April 28, 2012) She may be the number three player in the Netherlands, but today in Fes 20-year old Kiki Bertens was No. 1.

In the finals of the Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem event, Bertens looked to cap off her perfect run in Morocco as she faced Spain's Laura Pous-Tio. Bertens, who had to go through qualifying and had never won a main draw WTA match until this week, was still an underdog today having lost her previous meeting against Pous-Tio last year.

Both women stayed even with each other in the first set until at 4-5, Bertens reeled off three straight games to claim the set with help from a forehand error by Pous-Tio.

From that point on it was all Bertens as she went up an early break in the second set and then with a forehand winner earned a double break lead.

Pous-Tio tried to make a stand when she was down 0-4 and held advantage several times, but a forehand error from the Spaniard gave Bertens another break of serve. Bertens had no qualms serving out the match as she hit a final forehand winner to claim a 7-5, 6-0 victory.

Bertens is now the third woman in 2012 to go from qualifying to her maiden WTA title joining Mona Barthel who did it in Hobart and Hsieh Su-Wei in Kuala Lumpur.

Bertens earned $37,000 US and will jump into the top 100 when the new rankings come out on Monday.
