(March 4, 2012) Sara Errani took the title in Acapulco, battling past Flavia Pennetta after surviving some horrid serving results in the early going, 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-0.

After a whacky start which featured seven consecutive service breaks to start the match, Pennetta finally took the upper hand with her first hold in the eighth game, saving five break points in the process. Pennetta, who made good on each of her five break point opportunities in the first set, then served out the set, closing it with an ace.

After three straight holds to start the second set, a string of four more breaks left Errani with a thin lead of 4-3.

Five straight holds ensued, setting up a crucial second set tiebreaker, which saw Errani race out to a 5-0 lead and never look back.

In the third set, Pennetta looked fatigued, no doubt from trying to deal with high-bouncing topspin drives that regularly rifled off Errani’s racquet. The fact that each of the first two sets—full of grueling clay court tennis and stressful multiple deuce games—had lasted 57 minutes probably favored the younger Errani.

Losing only three points on her serve and facing no break points in the final set, Errani closed the match at a full sprint, notching her third career WTA title, and first since 2008.

"We both played well tonight, but Sara played really well in the important moments," Pennetta said. "I made a lot of mistakes in the tie-break and in the third set I was tired physically and it went really fast.”

Errani returned to the court later to secure the doubles title alongside fellow Italian Roberta Vinci. The 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Lourdes Dominguez Lino and Arantxa Parra Santonja was the pair’s 7th WTA doubles title and second in consecutive weeks.

Errani is the first player to sweep singles and doubles at the same WTA event since Czech Iveta Benesova accomplished the feat in April, 2010.
