(July 17, 2010) Foot surgery has forced Serena Williams to step out of the US Open Series.

The World No.1 has withdrawn from Sony Ericsson WTA Tour events in Istanbul, Cincinnati, and Montréal as a result of a necessary procedure on her right foot.

Last week Williams was cut on a broken glass while at a restaurant. At the time, the extent of the injury was unknown.

The injury also forced Williams to cancel her scheduled World TeamTennis appearances.

"I'm so upset I won't be able to play in the upcoming events because of this foot surgery," Williams said in a statement released by the WTA Tour. "Thank you for all of your support. I can't wait to get back on the courts."

The US Open begins on August 30th. Williams, who lost to Kim Clijsters in the 2009 US Open semifinals, has not yet made a statement on her participation in the season's final Grand Slam.
