The names weren’t the biggest, but some of the jumps were enormous as the winners and finalists of the Metz and Romania Opens soared up the ATP rankings over the weekend.

The biggest jump inside the Top 50 came courtesy France’s
Gilles Simon, who moved up eight spots to No. 33 with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Germany’s Mischa Zverev in the finals of the Metz Open.

It’s unlikely that Zverev had any complaints about finishing second. He entered the tournament with just a 7-14 record, but exited it having leaped 40 spots in the rankings to No. 115.

At Bucharest,
Juan Ignacio Chela took the title, defeating Spain’s Pablo Andujar 7-5, 6-1. Chela did not lose a set in the tournament, and upset Albert Montanes in the semifinals. Montanes slipped two spots with the defeat, passed by John Isner and Feliciano Lopez.

Chela, the 31-year-old Argentinian,  moved up 14 spots to No. 39 with his second title of the year. It’s his first time in the Top 40 since May of 2008. Andujar’s coach expected him to do so poorly that he had bought a return flight ticket for last Wednesday, but ended up having to stay through Saturday.

The 24-year-old Spaniard had to fight through three rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw, then took three-set wins in the second round and the semifinals to reach the final. He was rewarded accordingly, moving up from 105th to 77th, his highest rank ever and his first time in the Top 100 since May of 2009.
