Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli announced her immediate retirement from the sport after losing her second round match at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

The winner of eight WTA singles title including her biggest at Wimbledon this past July, Bartoli lost to Simona Halep 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in Cincinnati on Wednesday. In her post-match press conference, the French No. 1 stunned those on hand by saying that physically she could not continue playing anymore.

"My body just can't do it anymore. I've already been through a lot of injuries since the beginning of the year. I've been on the tour for so long, and I really pushed through and left it all during that Wimbledon," Bartoli said during her press conference when asked why she was calling it quits.

"Everyone will remember my Wimbledon title. No one will remember my last match here."

Bartoli also said she spoke to her father, Walter Bartoli, by phone earlier before making the decision.

Players and coaches on site and on social media expressed immediate surprise upon hearing the news.

Bartoli finishes her singles career with a record of 490 wins and 299 losses along with earning over $11 million in prize money.
