Roger Federer Australian Open
(January 17, 2012) An exciting first round of play has concluded, and as
Day 3 looms we can only hope for more of the same suspense moving into the second round. Day 3 features a full dose of talent with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal looking to continue their run for the championship.

The Spaniard will face off against Germany’s
Tommy Haas, who has yet to defeat Nadal in four tries, losing every set and falling in the third round at the 2009 Australian Open.

The Swiss will also tango with a German as he takes on
Andreas Beck. The two have played only once before, a straight set victory by Federer at the 2010 U.S. Open.

Also in action will be the young Australian
Bernard Tomic, who will face off against American Sam Querrey. Tomic survived a five-set thriller in the opening round against Fernando Verdasco, rallying from a two set to none deficit. Querrey cruised to a straight set victory over Kenny de Schepper in the first round. The two have never met in tournament play.

Seventh-seed
Tomas Berdych will play Olivier Rochus, who he holds a career 4-2 record against, with the only losses coming back in 2005. Stanislas Wawrinka will try to stop a resurging Marcos Baghdatis while Juan Martin del Potro looks to continue his recent rise against Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia.

The thirteenth-seeded Ukranian
Alexandr Dolgopolov will battle Tobias Kamke of Germany after both players had very different first round matches. Dolgopolov battled back from two sets down to sneak by Australia’s Greg Jones, while Kamke dismissed Victor Hanescu in straight sets, allowing only five games to the Romanian.

Americans
Mardy Fish and Donald Young will also be back in action. Fish will play Colombia’s Alejandro Falla, while Young takes on Lukas Lacko, who was a five set winner over Ivan Ljubicic.

Tenth-seeded
Nicolas Almagro will play young Bulgarian Gregor Dimitrov, while ageing David Nalbandian will take on the big serving American John Isner.

In other
Day 3 action, Yen-Hsun Lu plays Florent Serra, Pere Riba takes on Philipp Kohlschreiber, and Flavio Cipolla looks to upend Spain’s Feliciano Lopez
