(September 28, 2010) As big names took the court Tuesday for the second round of the Pan Pacific Open, local favorite Kimiko Date Krumm once again stole the show.

A day after
upsetting No. 17 Maria Sharapova, Krumm celebrated her 40th birthday in style by advancing when Daniela Hantuchova retired while trailing 6-2, 0-6,0-4.

Upsets abounded throughout the field as Germany’s Julia Goerges, ranked 42nd in the world, took a straight set victory over world No. 7
Samantha Stosur.

Also knocked for a loss was France’s
Aravane Rezai, drummed out of the field 6-4, 6-4 by the United States’ Coco Vandeweghe, her first big win since knocking off US Open and Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva in the fourth round at San Diego. Rezai entered the field ranked 18th in the world, Vandeweghe 172nd.

Another big winner on Tuesday was Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka, who took the court for the first time since
collapsing at the US Open. Azarenka easily dispatched of Lucie Safarova, 6-1, 6-3.

Other matches of interest included 14th-ranked
Marion Bartoli defeating Ana Ivanovic 6-2, 6-1; 22nd-ranked Flavia Pennetta outlasting No. 26 Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 4-6, 6-3; No. 4 Zvonareva handling Sara Errani 6-3, 6-3; 35th-ranked Andrea Petkovic defeating 13th-ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 7-5 ; No. 25 Kaia Kanepi over No. 19 Shahar Peer 6-3, 7-6(5) and No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki
crusiing past Hungary’s Greta Arn 6-1, 6-3.
