Reading the wide serve, Emma Navarro ripped a return vigor, it seemed to send the Wilson Blade flying out of Victoria Mboko’s hand as she slid on the baseline in desperate pursuit of the buzzing ball.
A precise Navarro disarmed Mboko 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 capturing her first clay-court championship in Strasbourg today.

Improving her flawless finals record to 3-0, Navarro scored her first career Top 10 win on clay and her first Top 10 win since she toppled No. 2 Iga Swiatek in Beijing last year.
Playing with energy and urgency from the opening point, Navarro converted seven of 21 break points in a two-hour, 20-minute triumph for her second WTA 500-level title.
The 25-year-old Navarro arrived in Strasbourg mired in a four-match, Tour-level losing streak.
Combining smooth court coverage with precise combinations, Navarro was hitting the ball cleanly breaking three times in a row to force feed Mboko a bagel in the opening set.
The top seed reset and broke to start the second set. Hitting deep drives, Navarro kept the ball moving corner to corner drawing some down the line errors as she took a 6-0, 4-2 lead.
Montreal champion Mboko responded carving out a series of drop shots as she broke back and eventually evened the set after eight games.
Staring down championship point serving at 4-5, 30-40, Mboko took some pace off a slider serve down the T. That surprised Navarro, who shoveled a stretched forehand return long. Mboko denied match point and navigated a tough hold for 5-all.
When a mis-hit Navarro backhand floated long, Mboko broke again for a 6-5 lead. Whipping the wide serve for triple set point, Mboko bunted a backhand drop shot winner serving out the second set at love.
In the final set, Navarro was quicker off the mark reading and responding to the drop shot, though she still tended to predictably play her response crosscourt. Mboko is the more explosive player capable of blowing open points with down the line drives, but Navarro was the more consistent player today and effectively hit her topspin forehand down the line to challenge the Canadian’s best stroke, her two-handed backhand, at critical stages in the final set.
Cracking a crosscourt forehand, Navarro forced the error breaking at 15 for a 3-1 lead.
A calm Navarro continued to drain errors from the Canadian, consolidating the break at 15 for a 4-1 third-set lead.
World No. 9 Mboko held a game point to close to 3-5, but Navarro’s defensive wizardry forced the Canadian to hit one more ball. Mboko smacked an easy smash into net to face deuce.
Reading the wide serve, Navarro rocketed that jolting return that knocked the racquet out of her opponent’s hand for a second championship point. When Mboko netted one final backhand, Navarro had her sixth career Top 10 win and maiden clay crown.
