Second Serve

Being an Australian Open ballkid wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be for this young lad on Day 4.

Poor youngster committed the cardinal sin of being a ballkid: He took his eye off the ball. During the first set of Feliciano Lopez’s match with Adrian Mannarino, the ballkid took a direct hit to the unmentionable region when a Lopez serve sailed by Mannarino’s outstretched racquet.

We have to hand it to the kid--he was game. He ever so dutifully tracked the ball down before having to take a knee with a big grimace on his face. Soon, both players came to his attention before he wisely left the court to a round of applause.

The ballboy wasn’t the only one who couldn’t complete his duties on the day. Adrian Mannarino fell ill in the heat after taking a two set and 4-0 lead, eventually retiring in the fourth set to hand Lopez the win.
