Kyrgios Helps Police Track His Stolen Car

A brazen car thief came for the wrong family.

A thief pulled a rifle on Nick Kyrgios' mom, Nil, and demanded the keys to his luxury, lime-green Tesla at about 8:30 on Monday morning.

The Kyrgios family faced a terrifying incident with calm resolve.

After the 32-year-old Canberra man, clad in dark clothing, stole the car, Mrs. Kyrgios immediately called her son to inform him.

Nick Kyrgios called police to report the theft and used a Tesla app on his phone to limit the car's speed.

That slow-down tactic proved crucial as police were able to pull the thief over after a short pursuit. The police blocked off a street in Ainslie and arrested the thief at about 9:03 a.m. with some local media reporting authorities tased the man.

Mrs. Kygrios told police she feared the man would return and “blow a hole in the door” of their home, Australian media reports.

The Kyrgios family is a tight-knit group. Nick Kyrgios, who has been rehabbing after underoing knee surgery last January, has tried to spend more time at home in Australia as his mother battled illness last year.

Mrs. Kyrgios has long been one of her son's staunchest supporters.

In a past interview with the Australian ABC TV show Reputation Rehab, Mrs. Kyrgios said her son often lets it all hang out.

“He walks around sometimes showing his private parts,” Mrs. Kyrgios revealed. “In the house, but that’s good because that’s a home isn’t it? The home is where you feel comfortable.”

Mrs. Kyrgios said seeing criticism of her son early in his career was “heartbreaking” and shared she “hates” seeing her son referred to as a tennis bad boy.

“At the beginning it was dreadful. It was heartbreaking,” Mrs. Kyrgios said. “Heartbreaking because I wanted to guard him.

"How do you guard someone from all that negativity? And some of them were racist and some of them were just terrible.”
