On a day filled with upsets, American Vania King finds herself a surprise semifinalist at the Guangzhou Open.

King, who came out of qualifying and then later beat Bojana Jovanovski, took on No. 8 seed Monica Puig in Thursday's quarterfinals. King came back from being blown out in the first set to eventually outlast Puig in three tough sets 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(5).

China's Zheng Jie also pulled off another similar comeback against No. 3 seed Laura Robson. After dropping the first set, Zheng rallied before rain halted play during a second set tiebreak. When play resumed, Zheng went on to take the set and the match 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-2.

King, playing in her first WTA semi of the season, will next face Zheng for a spot in the finals.

No. 2 Seed Cornet Upset, Zhang Advances.

The string of upsets started earlier in the day when No. 2 seed Alize Cornet found herself ousted by Austria's Yvonne Meusburger 6-4, 6-1.

Meusberger will next face China's Zhang Shaui who beat Johanna Konta 7-5, 6-3.
