China's Zhang Shuai came into this week's Guangzhou Open as a wildcard entrant but she finishes the week as its champion.

Zhang faced American Vania King who came all the way from qualifying to reach her first tour final in over seven years since Bangkok in 2006.

Zhang won a close first set that ended up in a tiebreak. After that, Zhang assumed control of the match by winning 16 of the last 17 points to seal the 7-6(1), 6-1 victory.

Guangzhou is the first ever WTA title for the Tianjin native who did not drop a set all week. Zhang previously won three WTA doubles titles in her career. Zhang is also the fifth Chinese woman ever to win a WTA singles tournament.

The doubles title was won by Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai.
